Bee Movie Inspiration

Bee MovieTo celebrate the foreseeable snow day, my siblings and I watched the “Bee Movie” last night.

The protagonist, Barry B. Benson, is a bee who just graduated from college and is disillusioned with his sole career choice: making honey. Wanting to discover more and make his life meaningful, he flies out of his hive and begin his adventure.

It is actually a light-hearted, cute little cartoon, but I was really into it from the beginning. I was really into it, because I can relate to Barry B. Benson. I can feel his anxiety about the beginning of his career and future. In less than three months, I will be out in the job market. I should feel ready. I mean, I had a very hands-on training for a year. Our school does not just teach us how to write media releases, we had to organize an actual news conference. Our school does not just teach us how to plan events, we had to plan and execute an event from start to finish. But somehow, I still feel uncertain. Am I going to get a good job? Am I going to like my job? Most important of all, am I truly ready?

It’s like that nerve-racking feeling you get when you are standing on the edge of the cliff with bungee jumping gears on. Everyone around you is telling you, “it’s safe, you are ready”, but you just cannot take the leap.

However, toward the end of the movie, the little bee actually calmed me down a bit and taught me something. He told me to quit doubting myself and just go out there and do what I am passionate about. Yes, I might screw up. But nobody is perfect, and every mistake brings new opportunity to learn.

I am lucky. Corporate Communications and Public Relations are used in all walks of life, and in all different fields. I am certain I will be able to find a field I am passionate about, and enjoy doing my work. Moreover, in our line of business, things are changing rapidly. Even the most experienced PR practitioners are learning new things every day. So I believe, as long as I keep an open mind, I would be able to a good job.

At the end of movie, I feel confident again. I still have no experience in working in Canada, but I am ready. I am ready to put what I learned into practice, and I am also ready to keep an open mind and learn new things that might come in my way.

Instead of just standing on the cliff and looking down with all the right equipments. I feel ready to take my chance and JUST DO IT. I can’t wait to JUMP and see what it might bring me.

Watch the Bee Movie when your anxiety is overwhelming, it will truly lighten up the mood.

And please share how you prepare yourself mentally when you enter the job market for the first time!!!

  • I am sitting at my placement desk as I read you account of being anxious about the next step after you finish post secondary education, and I still feel unsure about what I’m doing right now.

I think what Gary said is true, just do your best and let your work speak for itself. As students we think that we need to be perfect all the time. Placement has shown me that everyday is a learning experience. We just need to take it one day at a time.

I think I will take you up on the advice to watch the Bee Movie, who knows maybe it could teach me a thing or two.
